A handful of car insurers sell their policies in just one state, others operate on a regional basis, while some are truly national in scope, offering coverage in most if not all fifty states and the District of Columbia. My best picks, however, are more national in scope and write their policies in the majority of the states. USAA, whose reputation is absolutely stellar was not included because they limit their service to military personnel and their families.

Just so you know, I didn't base my picks on the lowest price, rather I considered other factors including policy offerings, ease of contacting the insurer as well as billing and payment options. Finally, please keep in mind that some insurers are stronger in one state while weaker in the next. But, my top five picks offer a good glimpse at insurers who are worthy of a closer look, perhaps just the right companies you'll want to contact for your auto insurance needs.

There are quite a few local agents so if you don’t get along with one, there are plenty to choose from. Why it's a best pick: Progressive made my best list because they allow the consumer to test their insurance rates on their online website. They know they have good rates and want to show it. You have listed some of the very worst!! Other sites have done some genuine research on this issue, and almost every one you listed as the very best, are actually among the very worst. The only exception is Amica. The others are to be avoided.
